  • World Health Assembly approves resolution addressing oral health By Brendan Day, Dental Tribune International GENEVA, Switzerland: The World Health Organization`s (WHO) management of the COVID-19 pandemic thus far has brought its fair share of criticism-including from many stakeholders in the dental industry. In some welcome news, the 74th session of WHO`s World Health Assembly has approved a resolution on oral health that asks WHO to, among other things, create a global strategy and an action plan for combating non-communicable oral diseases within the next two years. The resolution was put forward by Sri Lanka, together with other WHO member states, at a WHO executive board meeting this past January. According to Dr Habib Benzian, associate director for global health and policy at the New York University WHO Collaborating Center, it marked the first time since 2007 that WHO had adopted a resolution focused on improving oral health.

  • Children with immune deficiencies more likely to develop periodontal disease By Iveta Ramonaite, Dental Tribune International LONDON, UK: Primary immunodeficiency (PID) is characterised by a missing or poorly functioning part of the body`s immune system. Inherent from birth or acquired later in life, the disorder inhibits the body`s ability to fight all types of infections. New research has also found that, since children with PID have no natural defence against the oral microbiota that cause periodontal disease, they are more susceptible to developing gingivitis than systemically healthy children. According to a report published in the Journal of Translational Immunology, 4,758 patients had been entered into the UK Primary Immune Deficiency registry by August 2017. As detailed in an editorial published in Frontiers in Immunology last year, the worldwide incidence of people with PID is one in 10,000, and the disorder is more prevalent in children. Although the incidence rate is comparatively low, researchers have identified more than 300 diseases associated with PID to date, which is why its complications vary greatly, depending on the type of the disorder the patient has. Since children with PID are more prone to developing frequent, severe infections that compromise their overall health, more research needs to be done to improve understanding of the diagnosis, symptoms and treatment of the disease. • Sweden predicts continued shortage of dentists By Dental Tribune International JOHANNESHOV, Sweden: In 15 years` time there will still be a shortage of dentists. That is the conclusion of a new forecast by the Swedish Chancellor`s Office and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) which assesses the need for university graduates in the labour market and the number of training places for them in educational institutions. As reported by the members` magazine of the Swedish Dental Association Tandläkartidningen, the UKÄ`s forecast is that the number of dentists will have to increase by 10% by 2035. The study took into account both the number of students expected to complete training and the number of dentists moving to and from Sweden. The agency also noted that the demand for dentists is expected to increase by 10% over the same period, mainly owing to population growth. Currently, the job market for dentists is good. Almost all of those who graduated in 2016/2017 secured jobs within a year and a half of graduating. However, the results also show that the needs of the labour market are growing in many areas, and the forecast is that the number of upcoming university graduates will not cover these needs. According to the experts, this is expected to be going to pose great challenges in the future not only for higher educational institutions but also for the activities concerned.
